Whether you are rich or poor, young or old, we all experience life challenges at every point or stage in our lives irrespective of gender or race as humans.
How we manage these challenges determine the short – or long-term impacts in our lives. Cry, be angry, be upset, feel sad, and even be anxious during those challenging times. What you should never do is prolong these negative emotions deliberately to avoid undue and unnecessary health consequences such as:
- Heart problems e.g.High blood pressure or hypertension
- Mental and emotional consequences such as chronic stress, depression and anxiety, difficulty sleeping and impaired concentration, and poor decision-making during these prolonged negative feelings.
- Upset stomach and headaches.
- Your relationship with family and friends may suffer.
- You may resort to unhealthy habits such as over eating or alcohol consumption.
No matter what life throws at you, just know it is only a phase that will soon pass. Consciously and deliberately push back these negative feelings as soon as possible and look for the bright or positive outcomes of the challenging time you are experiencing.
Here are a few things to help you reduce the time you spend on these negative feelings:
1. Talk to someone (a friend, counselor, or therapist)
2. Engage in physical activity/exercises or relaxation techniques.
3. Practicing mindfulness or journaling how you feel and why.
4. Identify and address the source of the distress quickly.
